Armenian Church!

Hello readers! Just not long ago, I was at the Central Fire Station. Little did I know, that across the street, there is another national monument!

Armenian Apostolic Church of St Gregory the Illuminator, more known as the Armenian Church, is the oldest church building in Singapore. The oldest church is located across the street to the oldest fire station in Singapore. How cool is that!

I walked in, keen to learn more about it but there was not anyone around. So I took out my high-tech gadget and started ‘googling’ it. I learnt that the church was built in 1827 and most of the funding to build it came from 12 Armenian families. (Those Armenian families must have owned a backyard of gold) After the Japanese occupation, few Armenians remained. Since the end of World War 2, the church had not been able to conduct mass on a consistent basis as it has not had a resident priest.

Today, other Christian groups use the church for quiet worship.

An interesting fact!

In 1909, the church was one of the first buildings in Singapore to had electricity.
